Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS) is a decentralized system algorithm that does not rely of Proof of Work (Bitcoin) to prove its worth.
DPoS is a system capable of high transactions speeds (100K Txn/sec), uses very little electrical energy to create (mining) and that is secure from hacking or tampering.
For DPoS to function properly, it relies on witnesses to prove work on a DPoS supported blockchain. There may be hundreds of witnesses. Only the top 100 witnesses are paid but the top 20 earn VIT the greatest VIT rewards. Witnesses are elected by consensus within the VIT community. Witnesses are elected by people holding VIT tokens in the network. The strength of a persons vote depends on how many VIT they hold. People who own more influence the network more. As VIT will grow it will become harder and harder to remain a paid witness because of competition. If a witness is not performing well for the community, or they are a bad actor within the community, they can be removed by consensus.
